Our History

H&L was founded in 1981 by two Southern California produce veterans, who specialized in inbound produce brokerage serving the greater Los Angeles market. Since day one the company motto has been “Service with Integrity”.

In the mid 80’s we began providing consolidation and distribution services for a small but growing network of Organic farmers, distributors and retailers nationwide, many of whom remain trading partners to this day. The company grew slowly, by word of mouth, with attention to detail and service it’s primary goal.

As consumer interest in organic produce heightened during the nineties H&L broadened it’s scope to meet the burgeoning demand, evolving into a full line distributor of Organic fruits and vegetables.  We continued to provide consolidation and storage services to the Organic industry, helping a number of dedicated wholesalers and retailers streamline their operations and grow their businesses.

We now operate out of an 83,000 sq. re-purposed and modernized warehouse in the City of Commerce, just outside of downtown Los Angeles.  With ten coolers, five temperature zones, and a seasoned crew of 40 warehouseman and drivers we are able to meet an array of needs demanded by customers of all sizes located across the entire U.S. and Canada.  We offer storage services to Organic farmers and marketers allowing them greater and more timely market reach from the LA produce hub, and we provide consolidation services for Organic distributors and retailers looking to build efficiency into their supply chain.

Our sales and sales support team is some 20 strong, and takes special pride in locating and offering hard to find produce items year round.  We offer our retail clients a customized program including building specialized orders for multiple stores, in order to streamline logistics.  Our freight team provides delivery throughout Southern California, also handling local pickups and deliveries for our consolidation and storage clients.

We are proud of the Organic farmers we trade with, many of whom we’ve partnered with for nearly three decades.  We’ve forged special relationships with several growers, who have entrusted us with the majority of their product year after year. We are heartened by the increasing size and diversity of Organic agriculture, and at the same time we remain committed to supporting the critical network of smaller, but staunch and vibrant organic farming pioneers.  We are uniquely positioned to provide growers of all sizes smooth access to the markets they need in order to flourish.

We are certified organic by CCOF, and maintain a rigorous food safety program audited by SCS.

Most important, we take great pride in our skilled team, many of whom are first and second generation immigrants, who have helped us build a friendly and efficient operation that serves the need for fresh, nutritious, and sustainably grown food.
